The application domain shall develop prototype solutions adhering to Industry 4.0 standard for two industries, namely textile and medical equipment manufacturing. The objective is to demonstrate the viability of getting compliance to Industry 4.0 for the key industries of Pakistan that play a vital role in the exports and, at the same time, quantify the benefits of automation to other industrial sectors. Around the globe, traditional manufacturing is going through digital transformation. US has initiated industrial internet, cyber physical systems, and advanced manufacturing program (AMP) for future manufacturing. Germany is leading this transformation termed as fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0). China has also launched the 2025 Program and Internet Plus to focus on smart manufacturing. Digital manufacturing uses computers, networking and related technologies, such as Internet of Things (IoTs) to control and optimize the entire production process. In the manufacturing industry, their processes need to adapt to this rapid change. The objective of the application domain is to make key industries appreciate the fourth industrial revolution.

Dr. Shoab A Khan

Principal Investigator

Dr. Shoab has an extensive industrial experience of more than 22 years in USA & Pakistan. He’s authored more than 300 publications in his field of computer engineering and is an inventor of 5 awarded US patents. Dr. Shoab is also a recipient of several prestigious honours including Tamgha e Imtiaz (Civil), National Education Award, and NCR National Excellence Award in Engineering Education. He’s served as

  • Chairman of Pakistan Association of Software Houses (P@SHA)
  • Member board of governance of many entities in Ministry of IT & Commerce
  • Member National Computing Council and National Curriculum Revision Committee

Presently, Dr. Shoab is member of PM Task force of Knowledge Economy and heads IT HRD task force. He has a keen interest in Industry 4.0

Dr. Syed Tahir Zaidi

Dr. Tahir’s multidimensional expertise lie in range of disciplines including system development, networking, provisioning of IT services, and data processing, and he has authored more than 100 publications. He’s a part of multiple academic and technical committees at NUST and national level including National Curriculum Revision Committee. Dr. Tahir has served as Director ICT at College of E&ME and has been on the forefront for introduction of Cloud Computing Labs and Infrastructure at NUST. He has completed numerous projects involving distributed computing and understands the requirements, and implementation of a cloud setup. His interest lies in Internet of Things, Big Data & Cloud Computing.




Dr. Imran Akhtar

Dr. Imran Akhtar is an expert in the field of computational mechanics, modelling and simulation. He has authored more than 120 publications with more than 1200 citation in the field. Dr. Imran has also developed software using MPI platform for fluid flows and is currently in the field of flow control in energy efficient building. Dr. Imran Akhtar was the Principal Investigator of the research project titled ‘High Performance & High Productivity Computing (HP2C) based Integration and Automation in Energy Efficiency Buildings” funded by COMSTECH-The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).

Dr. Usman Qamar

Co - Principal Investigator

Dr. Usman has authored more than 150 publications and also published 2 books with Springer & Co. He has 2 patents applied with Intellectual Property Office, UK. He was awarded best researcher of Pakistan 2015-16 and received two best research paper awards at Outstanding Research awards by HEC. He’s an experts committee member of Engineering & Technology for the Evaluation of National Research Journal (HEC). Dr. Usman was also a visiting research fellow at Centre of Decision Research, University of Leeds (UK) and served as scientific doctor at Data & Text Mining Lab, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK.

Industry 4.0

Health Care

Working on health care, the lab will strength health care mechanisms as well as to improve allocation resources. Data enabled solutions will help to make a fool proof national programmes.

Cloud Computing

Three types of services are provided:
- HPC and storage resources through a broker architecture.
- Generic data analytics algorithms utilizing HPC.
- Domain specific data analytic algorithms using generic data analytics and HPC/storage resources.
- Healthcare, ACES and Industry 4.0 are planned as three application area


This research endeavour proposes an innovative idea of energy conservation through the integration of high performance & high productivity computing (HP2C) tools (such as physics-based algorithms for energy budgeting, simulation, control and optimization) with microcontrollers which would use sensors/actuators, thus rendering them smart sensors and intelligent controllers, to make HVAC systems efficient.
