About Us

The main objective of the Precision Agriculture and Analytics Lab (PAAL) will be to utilize big data analytics for agricultural research & education, technology development and dissemination. It will bring forward cutting edge precision agriculture and modelling; bioinformatics and climate science; big data analytics and outreach to reach one common objective of sustain-ably increasing agricultural productivity.

Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan

Principal Investigator

Prof. Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan is a renowned expert in Agriculture, Education and Policy Research with outstanding professional career spanning over more than 4 decades. Dr. Khan is currently Vice Chancellor at University of Agriculture Faisalabad for 3rd term. Dr. Khan attained his PhD from the University of California, Riverside, USA.  He has a long and multifarious career in education, research and administration. Dr. Khan has strong hold on policy issues and has been engaged in important tasks forces and high-level committees related to agriculture policy, agriculture and livestock marketing, trade of agricultural commodities etc. He is a scientist of eminence and bestowed with astute management skills. He has released a potato variety (PARS-70), pioneered the research on breeding seedless Kinnow and discovered new varieties of wheat. He has initiated an internationally acclaimed program to solve a problem called Witches’ Broom Disease of Lime, which poses a global threat to citrus fruits, the vitamin-C provider for masses. He is author/editor of several books and hundreds of research papers related to science and policy including a 2018 book on Sustainable Agriculture and lead editor for Agro-ecological Zones of Punjab published in 2019 by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

With expertise in Peri-urban agriculture, environmental horticulture, tropical agriculture, cell biology, fruit genetics and breeding, Dr. Khan is supporting young researchers to work on cutting edge gene editing and precision agriculture technologies for uplift of agriculture and national food security using modern technologies.  

Dr. Muhammad Asif Kamran

Co - Principal Investigator

Dr. Muhammad Asif Kamran received BSc (Hons) and MSc (Hons) degrees in Agricultural Economics from PMAS University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi and University of Agriculture Faisalabad respectively. With a PhD in Natural Resources Management from Asian Institute of Technology Thailand, Dr. Kamran has around 20 years of professional experience in different organizations including Asian Development Bank and International Water Management Institute (IWMI) funded projects, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), U.S. Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Agriculture and Food Security at University of Agriculture Faisalabad and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. Dr. Kamran is also a LEAD Pakistan fellow on theme of ‘Future Water Leaders’. His academic interests include economics of precision farming, comparative institutional analysis in natural resources governance, climate change adaptation and agriculture policy.  His major research work has appeared in leading academic journals including Water International, Chemosphere, International Journal of the Commons, Outlook in Agriculture, and Natural Hazards. Dr. Kamran was also among cp-authors for Agro-ecological Zones of Punjab, Pakistan published by Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations in 2019. 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Saqib Ali

Co - Principal Investigator

Dr. Saqib Ali is working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. He holds a B.Sc. Agriculture Engineering degree from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Recently, he completed his Post Post-Doctorate studies from Guangzhou University of China where his topic of research was Industrial Control Systems using Advance Machine Learning techniques and Blockchain technologies. Also, he is a part of the PingER project led by the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Stanford, USA. Over the last year, his research is inclined towards Intelligent Control Systems using IoTs, Big Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and the application of Robotics in the field of Precision Agriculture. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Rana Muhammad Atif

Co - Principal Investigator

Dr. Rana Muhammad Atif graduated as Plant Breeder and Geneticist from University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan. He then pursued his higher studies in France and completed M2 (Professional) in Plant Biotechnology from University of Burgundy / INRA, Dijon, France. Further he studied the genetic and hormonal factors controlling seed development in the model legume Medicago truncatula and earned Ph.D. in “Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics” with distinction “très honorable” from University of Burgundy and INRA, Dijon, France. Dr. Atif had also been a visiting scientist in Professor Douglas Cook’s Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Climate Resilient Chickpea, at the University of California, Davis, USA during 2016-17.

Dr. Atif’s research interests include the genetic improvement of pulse legumes especially chickpea (a nutrients rich crop) for their adaptability under changing climate scenario. He has been employing RAD-GBS based association mapping, genomics, transcriptomics, and bioinformatics to help identify genomic regions and candidate genes associated with plant’s adaptation to stress environments. His lab has also been collaborating with Dr. Douglas Cook’s lab at UC Davis, for the identification and annotation of stress-responsive genes from the latest genome assembly of Chickpea. He has also been involved in plant-microbiome studies using metagenomics and next generation sequencing (NGS) for bio-geodiversity determination of chickpea root nodule associated bacteria from Pakistan.Dr. Rana Muhammad Atif graduated as Plant Breeder and Geneticist from University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan. Research Domains

Precision Agriculture Domain

Developing precision agriculture technology packages for service providers/farmers, remote sensing-based integrated models for yield gap analysis, real-time water use mapping, agro-ecological zones, crop reports, and indigenized smart sensors and agricultural machinery tools.

Agricultural BioInformatics Domain

The Bioinformatics domain is making use of crops genome’s sequencing data as well as RNA-Seq based transcriptomic data for the identification and characterization of stress-responsive genes in various crops.

Data Science Domain

Develop parsimonious statistical models, data analytics, economic suitability mapping of crops in different ecologies, adoption studies and delivering data through interactive interfaces.
